Troops were kept under tight security prior to boarding craft to take them across the Channel. You are looking at areas on the coast in the west.

Re: Normandy Tours....
One of my boys did a trip here last week. The weird thing was it was a language trip and they didn't go to the battle grounds or beaches....

Thought they would have tagged the history side in as well.

They see some places but not what I would have thought a Normandy trip should be all about.

He enjoyed it and said the boat erupted when France won the world cup, they were crossing at the time of the final.

Epsom if you can find out what regiment. However I would have thought there would be little to see this side of the water other than what's in museums.

Do you know of a book that details the embarkation points for troops for D Day? I have a friend coming over next summer from the states whose father was on D Day, we are trying to plan a trip around some of the locations here in the UK he may have spent time in before going across to France and visiting the various sites over there.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Grumps.... depends on how long the tour is, when it is and what standard of coach you want... ours was £349 for a 3 night 2 day tour.... extra 40 euros for some extras (grub and museum passes)..... was worth every penny

Mind me asking how much it cost you please Soldo and how many days is needed to book off, as me and the missus have been wanting to pay our respects properly for a long time now?

Watched a programme on the 51st Highlanders the other day and it's nor good enough for me to just sit at home with goose bumps over these fella's sacrifices, it's time to get over there.

NS,
Good that you got to go,as I've said went with the school 35 years ago.it really did hit me the devastation and sacrifice what they went through,I don't think emotionally (apart ftom losing close family)anything comes close.
I don't think I'll ever go back once in a lifetime is enough for me.An incredible humbling experience.

Re: Normandy Tours....
I was not to sure about taking our 10 year old to see a bit of History, so opted for De Panne Beach (just in Belgium) was the beach nearest to the Germans that was used in "Dunkirk" Evacuation (There is a fair bit of History there all remembered on plaques and statues) If anyone has seen the film Dunkirk (Black and white version) were they drove the trucks into the sea to make a pier it was here.
We choose this location as there is a water park up the road, along with IBIS hotel and cheap fags and Chocolates. Therefore no matter what everyone was happy.

Trev - thanks mate, noted that and spoken again with my lad about going, its on the list for next year now

Luke - I drove past that village and had been made aware of the events prior, had a crossing to meet but regret not having made time available. Fair to say the French are still somewhat pissed off about it

If you Google the village, there are thorough details available against a timeline - awful and in an area of calm too

As I said earlier, the French are a total contradiction in reality, proud, respectful and retaining memory of their history, yet repeatedly delivering abject fuckwits to lead them

Re: Normandy Tours....
If you want to see an example of why the French people have never really forgiven the Germans, go and see Oradour sur Glane, near Limoge... 642 people wiped out by the Nazis in 1944. Worst of it was, the French resistance had captured a high ranking German officer, and the Germans intelligence told them he was taken / held by the villagers of Oradour sur Glane, when in fact they had no involvement whatsoever, and the captured officer was actually some 20 miles away at Oradour sur Vayres... That geographical error cost the villagers of Oradour sur Glanes their lives...

The old village has been kept exactly as it was following the massacre, the car wreck you see in some pics was the local doctor... he came to plead with the Germans about the mistake they were making, and was dragged from his car and shot dead on his knees in front of men, women and children. The car has not been moved from that day to this. The men were taken to three seperate locations, machine gunned and burned. The women and children were crammed into the church, boarded up, and set on fire...

If you are EVER remotely close, give up half a day and go see this place... then tell me you want to stay in the EU under the thumb of these German cnuts...

Re: Normandy Tours....
Hi Crassus book I recommend getting hold of in advance is Major & Mrs Holt's Battlefield Guide - Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches. Make sure you get the map with it. Loads more I could recommend but this is a good starting point.
